Entry | The trenches. Between 2p.m. and 2.30p.m. there was a combined bombardment by artillery (18 pdrs and howitzers), Stokes Mortars and 2" Mortars of the enemy's wire and front line parapet between points C10b.5.9. And C4d.2.4. (sheet 36 NW 22 NE1 HOUPLLLINES). The enemy's retaliation consisting of light and heavy Trench Mortar fire was chiefly directed against ESSEX CENTRAL FM, GAP 'C' and just N of the head of LONG AVENUE. No casualties were caused: the whole of the front line had previously been thinned out, and the men withdrawn to Support trenches. During the operation a regimental sniper shot one of the enemy in the front line from CAP 'D'. Otherwise the day was quiet. In the morning 29830 L/Cpl Dobbin, J (D Coy) was wounded, but remained at duty. |
