Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, The trenches
Entry At about 5.30a.m. a raiding party of the enemy (12 strong) attacked a front line bombing post killed Pte Gulliver and took prisoner Pte Goodwin (C Coy) and was then expelled. During the periods 9.30a.m. - 10a.m. and 3.15p.m. - 3.45p.m. there was a combined artillery and trench mortar bombardment for wire cutting along the Divisional front. The 2inch Trench Mortars were employed for wire cutting, the 18 pdr. Batteries and the Howitzer Battery covered this trench mortar fire and were in the case of the field guns directed against the enemy's parapet where the gaps were made in the wire, while the Howitzer battery was employed against known enemy trench mortar positions. Good shooting was made and both bombardments appeared to be effective. The enemy's retaliation was slow in coming and was only of moderate strength: it consisted largely of trench mortar fire, but the small and heavy mortar bombs fell on parts of the defences which were unoccupied. Little material damage was done and no casualties were caused. Previous to the bombardments the front line was thinned out and men were brought back into Support trenches. In consequence little work was done in the trenches. Between 8a.m. and 9a.m. 2 of the enemy were hit by Regimental snipers.
