Home of the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire

War Diary

1916-11-11
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Pont de Nieppe
Entry In the trenches. Weather still dry. A quiet day: the regimental snipers claimed 2 hits, working parties in each case suffering. Between 10p.m. and 10.30p.m. a combined gas discharge and bombardment was carried out on the Div front: the objectives were the enemy's CT's, selected points and back areas. The gas appeared to catch the enemy off his guard and alarms could be heard some time after the discharge. The retaliatory fire was slight, only field guns and trench mortars being employed, but there was a considerable amount of rifle and machine gun fire. All was quiet by 10.35p.m. and the night passes without event. The Battn suffered no casualties either from the gas or the hostile artillery fire.
