Regiment | 1st Wiltshire |

Location | France, Pont de Nieppe |
Entry | The trenches. A combined bombardment of three minutes duration by Div Artillery and Stokes Mortars was carried out a 4.30a.m. upon the Div front, the objective being the Germans front and support lines. It was planned to inflict damage to hostile working parties. Gas was also discharged, except upon this Brigade front where the discharge was cancelled at the last moment. The retaliation slight, trench mortars and field guns opening fire. Previously about 4a.m. Lewis Gun fire from the right Coy had caused three or four casualties in an enemy working party opposite. Throughout the day both sides were quiet. At night patrols went out from centre and left coys, found the enemy's wire very strong, and heard the enemy busily working in his front line baling out water revetting and repairing his parapet. No hostile patrols could be seen. |
