Entry The trenches. Enemy was quiet until late in the afternoon when about 3.30p.m. a heavy bombardment commenced upon the Battn on the left, the 10th Cheshire Regt. The P line of this sector was whizz banged and the Grange CT suffered some damage. About 6.30p.m.the enemy began to create a barrage of lachrymatory shell on Cross St. and Quarries, the junction of Pont CT and Cross St marking the right of the gas area. The gas became particularly dense in Cross St where a Coy of the 7th Rifle Brigade was standing to. After dark the enemy attacked and carried P79 and P78 and also reached P79S and part of P78S: The Battn bombers were dispatched to make a block in P78S N of LASSALE CT. The task of counter attacking fell to the Brigade reserve the 8th LN Lancs. Who were brought up from the PYLONES line and the BETHUNE Rd dugouts. The enemy were forced to vacate the PS line, but still remained in possession of P79 and part of P78. The casualties in the Battn due to shelling were:- Wounded Ptes Bristow A, Ware H, Barrett W G, Kitley R A, Godwin E H, Bailey R. Suffering from gas L/Cpl Staples J, L/Cpl Bird J, the latter still at duty. Throughout the night the Coys were reporting the damage done to the P line by shell fire.
