War Diary

1916-05-17
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Pylones
Entry The Battn relieved the 8th LN Lancs Regt in the front line. The night was quiet except for some bombing activity at the top of Common CT during which one man was killed and three wounded. These were:- killed Pte Rogers, F: wounded Ptes Bancroft ,Williams, A E, Foote, all of C Coy. The following day Pte Williams died of wounds. The bombing attack which was made at 10 and repeated at 10.30p.m. was driven back : a patrol went out at 11.30p.m. and discovered an old sap which ran SE from the far side of the Common Crater. Apparently the enemy used this sap to get within bombing distance of the post. Early in the evening the Battn bombing sergeant, Sgt Hibberd was wounded by an English 9.2 shell dropping short in the Quarries. Many casualties must have been inflicted on the enemy while the bombing attack was being driven back, and again about 11.30p.m. when a stokes gun fired on an enemy working party on the N edge of Albany Crater. On this occasion loud cries were heard.
