War Diary

1916-05-04
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, La Targette
Entry During the day enemy was very quiet. Work was carried on in the trenches connecting the new craters and the outpost line and at four posts steel loophole plates were inserted. At 7.55p.m. an enemy mine was sprung just to the S of the already existing crater at the top of Grange CT: a post of two men was buried and 2nd Lieut Clark, D Coy, who was also buried was extracted after five hours work. He suffered only from bruises and shock. The effect of the explosion was to fill in the already existing crater and form a large plateau, the near edge of which was consolidated. By this mine the enemy put himself in a worse position than formerly in the way of sniping. 2nd Lieut Sainsbury, D Coy, again did good work. The casualties were:- Missing believed killed Ptes Hursey and Dudman of C Coy. Wounded Pte Ellis.
