War Diary

Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location France, Robecq
Entry The Battn proceeded upon the second stage of the march at 8.15a.m. the destination being VALHUON S of PERNES. After passing through LILLERS the country became more interesting and hills and slag heaps rose into view. VALHUON was not reached until 2.45p.m.: in spite of the length of this second march very few men fell out. The village had only been evacuated by the French a few days before and in consequence the billeting of the first English troops proved a matter of not little difficulty. However, by the next morning the billets had been made habitable. About 10p.m. a draft of 42 other ranks arrived from St POL: of the 42 no less than 36 were men who had either been wounded or sick.. Some had been with the 5th Battn in the Dardanelles, some were from the 2nd and the remainder had been previously serving with the 1st. The physique showed a great improvement on that of previous drafts and the men were younger but only 6 had seen no active service.
