War Diary

1916-01-12
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, The Piggeries
Entry Two Coys practised tubular helmet drill. Usual Lewis Guns and bombing instruction. A large party was required for work in the evening upon the breastwork behind trench 121: there were four casualties, Pte Parsons was killed. Ptes Hall and Clark dies of their wounds, and Pte Hawkins was wounded. This was due to a machine gun opening fire from the enemy trench opposite trench 123. Late in the evening 11 enemy shells landed in the vicinity of the Piggeries, the nearest not being more than ten yards away. The men in the huts N of the lane to Piggeries were quickly turned out. One shell actually destroyed half of one of the huts. A piece of shell penetrated the roof of the Piggeries and wounded Pte Vines in the ear. There was no further damage. The enemy's intention was dubious: his target may have been on of our batteries or the Piggeries itself.
