War Diary

1916-01-04
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, Ploegsteert Wood
Entry Weather mild. Considerable artillery activity during the day commencing at 12.30p.m. When the enemy shelled Moated Farm, ST YVES and Hyde Park Corner. From 2.30p.m. for an hour we bombarded the enemy front line opposite trench 123 with trench mortars, rifle grenades and bombs and caused considerable damage to their parapet, but not a single German was seen. It is quite possible they suspected something and withdrew into their second line. Retaliation came after 11 minutes and for the first half hour was moderately heavy. It then increased in strength and a large number of shells fell in rear of trenches 123 and 120 and along the Fort Boyd line, and near Hunters Avenue. There were five casualties. Ptes Ashton and Hale (A Coy) Pte Musselthwaite (B Coy) Ptes Griffin and Hyde (D Coy) were slightly wounded and L/Cpl Hill (C Coy) suffered from shock. At night we played upon the enemy's damaged trench with machine gun fire and fired rifle grenades, but it is not known with what result. 5 Germans were sniped by us during the day.
