War Diary

1915-12-27
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, Ploegsteert Wood
Entry Weather mild: rain. Trench mortars and howitzers bombarded the Bird Cage in the afternoon in order to inflict damage to new work there. Enemy retaliated by shelling the vicinity of Fort Boyd. One dugout caught fire. Casualties Two, 2nd Lieut Millard had a shrapnel bullet to the shoulder and Pte Green was wounded in the stomach. In the evening rifle grenades were fired and bombs hurled against the enemy trench. The feeble reply would suggest that the front line was weakly held. As a result of the West bomb thrown braking and sending a bomb behind instead of hurling it forward two men were wounded, one severely. The precaution was taken of clearing the trench before the catapults were employed. The two men wounded were Ptes Rudman and Bean.
