War Diary

1915-12-06
Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, Ploegsteert
Entry At 11.45p.m. 2nd Lieut Macklin went out and cut four rows of wire in front of German trenches. 2nd Lieuts Sharpe, Cartwright and 50 men were in readiness to make an attack, four parties being told off for separate trenches. At 2.10a.m.(7th) 2nd Lieut Macklin returned and reported a listening post just inside the last row of wire which he was consequently unable to cut, he also had to crawl through 6yds of water just outside the wire. As the night had cleared it was not considered possible to surprise the enemy, owing to the water in front of the wire and the listening post. Consequently at 4.30a.m. the enterprise was abandoned. 2nd Lieut Macklin cut wire within 4yds of the enemy's listening post, and crawled back unobserved.
