Regiment 1st Wiltshire
Location Belgium, Hooge
Entry Fine. Battn occupied clearing ground where possible. The trenches were very wet, a great amount of labour would be required to put the position in a satisfactory state of defence. The Battn was relieved by 4th Royal Fusiliers. During the relief bombing activities broke out on immediate right followed by rifle and machine gun fire along the front. Artillery support was called for and the covering battery promptly opened fire on the HOOGE front. The enemy replied by shelling our fire trenches. The trenches were greatly congested at the time owning to the relief, D Coy suffering several casualties. Relief was suspended for a time by the Corps. No further action developed however, and the relief was eventually carried out. The Battn marched back to bivouacs at BUSSEBOOM arriving at 5a.m. on 27th. Casualties 2 killed 22 wounded.
