On 1 Feb 1885, Sudan, Suakin. Battalion on reconnaisance in Square Formation. Contact with enemy, in large numbers, at Hashien. Attempts to engage unsuccessful. Battalion returned to Camp.
On 12 Mar 1885, Sudan, Suakin. Enemy attached Ordnance Stores at 0330. Two Sentries killed, seven guards wounded, one native boatman killed, two wounded. Enemy retired towards Handouh, carrying casualties. One enemy dead recovered.
On 12 Mar 1885, India, Nowshera. One Schoolmaster, one Corporal and two Privates (invalids) left for Bombay and embarked on HMTS 'Serapis' for England on 1 April
On 19 Mar 1885, India, Nowshera. Battalion Headquarters (14 Officers, two Warrant Officers, 70 Corporals and 427 Men) route march via Taru for Peshawar for reception of His Highness Abdul Rachman Khan, Amir of Afghanistan. Distance 28 miles
On 20 Mar 1885, Sudan, Suakin. Battalion, in Brigade, advanced to contact with enemy in direction of Hashun. Enemy driven off. Two men of Battalion severely wounded. Battalion returned to Suakin.
On 22 Mar 1885, Sudan, Suakin. Battalion with Royal Marines and Indian Contingent, marched eight miles towards Tamai (?) to build three Zaribas. While still unfinished, were heavily attacked by Arabs of the Hadindowa tribe. After severe fighting enemy were driven off, losing 3000 killed and died of wounds. Battalion lost 21 killed, 33 wounded.
On 24 Mar 1885, Sudan, Near Suakin. Enemy attacked a convoy marching into Zariba - but they repulsed with heavy loss.
On 25 March the Battalion escorted an envoy towards Suakin, and back.
