On 7 Mar 1855, Australia, Melbourne. Regiment received orders to embark for Van Diemens land. Headquarters (Nine Officers and 240 Other Ranks) embarked on steam ship 'City of Hobart' for Hobart. Sailed same day and arrived at Hobart on 11 March, disembarked on 12 March and marched to barracks
On 19 Mar 1855, England. Establishment of the Regiment was augmented to a strength of 16 companies. Four companies were stationed in Malta, four in England and eight in the Crimea
On 5 May 1855, Crimea. A sortie made by Russians against the 49th in the trenches on 5 May.
On 7 June the 49th were part of a successful assault against the Quarries.
On 8 September the 49th supported a second attack on the Redan.
On 16 October the Regiment was authorised to bear the Battle Honours 'Alma', 'Inkerman' and 'Sebastopol' on its Colours
On 18 June 1855, Crimea, Near the Redan. Regiment in support of attack on the Redan. Support duties and working parties before the Redan. These duties continued until September 1855
On 10 Jan 1856, Australia, Hobart. Headquarters (Seven Officers, 276 Other Ranks, 16 women and 29 children) embarked on 'Windsor' transport for England. Set sail on 12 January in company with detachment of 1st Battalion 12th Regiment for relief of detachment of 99th in Western Australia.
On 9 Feb 1856, Australia, Freemantle. 'Windsor' anchored, exchanged 12th detachment for 99th Detachment and provisioned and watered, sailing again on 15 February, arrived at St Helena on 9 April and watered, sailing again on 11 April
On 28 May 1856, England, Spithead. 'Windsor' arrived at Spithead with Headquarters 99th. Casualties on voyage - two births and four (infant children) deaths. Telegraphs orders received to proceed at once to Cork and 'Windsor' sailed for Ireland on 21 May
