On 13 June 1854, Crimea, Scutari. Battalions were reorganised into eight Service and four Depot companies.
The Service companies embarked at Scutari on 19 June and landed at Varna on 21 June.
From Varna the 49th marched towards Silistria on 3 July, encamped at Yuckasova on 6 July, marched back to Varna on 30 August and embarked there on 31 August.
On 14 Sept 1854, Crimea, River Bulganak. Disembarkation commenced and the 49th bivouacked at Touzla in heavy rain.
On 19 September the 49th marched south towards Sebastopol and bivouacked by the River Bulganak.
The 49th arrived at Alma on 20 September, where the Battle of Alma took place, in which they took a very successful part.
Four days later, on 24 September, the advance on Sebastopol resumed. Balaklava was reached on 26 September and, on 28 September, the 49th took up position to the left of Sebastopol.
On 25 Oct 1854, Crimea, Inkerman. During October the 49th deployed on the Heights of Inkerman.
Battle of Balaklava took place on 25 October.
The next day the defenders of Sebastopol made a sortie against the division of which the 49th was part. This is often called the first Battle of Inkerman.
On 5 November the 49th took part in the second or major Battle of Inkerman. After Inkerman the 49th returned to duties of the siege
