2nd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia photograph of the officers at Umballa in India , March, 1907. It shows, in the rear row, right to left, Lieutenant A,.G.M. Sharpe, 2nd Lieutenant T.R. Aldworth, Lieutenant and Adjutant C.F. de S Murphy, Lieutenant A.G.E. Bingley, Lieutenant and Quartermaster Mr. H.S. Lickman, Lieutenant M.L. Slaughter and Lieutenant A.E.F. Harris. In the 2nd row, seated, are Captain R.P.Harvey, Major E. Feetham, Major R.N. Gamble DSO, Lieutenant Colonel F.W.N. McCracken, Major G.H. Arbuthnot and Captain F.W. Foley DSO. (Standing L to R) Lieutenant James Duberly [Died of Jaundice in 1912], Lieutenant M. L.Slaughter, Lieutenant George William Patrick. Dawes, Lieutenant Benjamin C Sparrow. (Sat L to R) Captain Richard. G. Macdonnell, Colonel Frederick William Nicolas McCracken DSO [Commanded the 15th Scottish Division 1915 - 1917], Lieutenant Cuthbert Henry Tindall Lucas, Lieutenant Oliver Steel [ Killed in Action 25.10.1914]. [Note re Dawes - He was a career soldier and much decorated Boer War veteran, Lieutenant George Dawes served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was one of the first Britons to learn to fly, gaining his pilot's license (No. 17) in 1910. Promoted to Captain soon after, he was transferred to the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and commanded No. 11 Squadron (for eight months in 1915) before being posted to the Balkans as Officer Commanding, RFC in that theatre of war, a position he held from 1916 to 1918. Mentioned in dispatches on seven occasions, Dawes was honoured by the Greek and Serbian Governments and awarded the French Croix de Guerre.]
