23rd Rifle Brigade - A black and white photograph of five soldiers of B Company who all served in the original G Company of the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. All volunteered on the outbreak of the 1st World War in 1914, and left England for India in December, 1915. They spent all summer of 1916 on the borders of the science desert, where the average temperature was 129.4 degrees. Four are from Reading, and one from Newbury. [Standing L to R] Rifleman 793 Arthur Josey, 3 Norfolk Road, Reading, Rifleman 788 Harry Holton, 14 Leopold Road, Reading, [Sat L to R] Rifleman 789 Tom Higgs, 1 Norfolk Road, Reading, Corporal 780 Arthur Wyse, 102 Cumberland Road, Reading, Rifleman 808 John Adler, 7 Speen View Terrace, Newbury. Rifleman Adler lost a son in France.
