Location France, N of Jenlain
Entry Assembly positions reached at 0115 hours on the road running North of JENLAIN. The Battalion attacked under a heavy barrage at 0600 hours. Little opposition was encountered until the PETIT AUNELLE River was reached. This was overcome and all objectives reached by 1015 hours with slight casualties. 2nd Lt FRENCH took out a patrol and captured 9 prisoners. At 1200 hours strong patrols were pushed out with a view to clearing the village of ETH. Heavy Artillery and Machine Gun fire was met and patrols had to return. It was finally decided to put a barrage down and advance at 1630 - "C" & "A" companies leading the attack. ETH was captured and a position taken up on the high ground to the East of it. "B" company under 2nd Lieut GV AUTON DCM was detailed to mop up the village. This was done very successfully, 50 prisoners being captured from the Chateau. Total number of prisoners for the day were 60. Machine Guns captured 6. 2/Lt WF VIRGIN "B" coy was killed in the advance to the first objective.
