Leading are the assault pioneers wearing white aprons and carrying ceremonial silver axes. (L to R) Corporal Annear, Sergeant Rose, Corporal Irving, followed by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Coxon. By tradition the pioneer sergeants in British army infantry battalions were the only soldiers allowed to wear a beard. The leading of the battalion by the pioneers on ceremonial occasions recalled the times when they had to clear a way across country for the main body of troops to follow

2nd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photo of theconsecration of the recently erected headstone, at a cemetery in Dover in 1995, on the grave of L/Corporal House who won the Victoria Cross during the Boer War; despite the fact that he had a full military funeral when he died in 1910, no headstone was erected then as, suffering badly from the pain of the wounds he had received some 8 years previously when he won the VC, he had committed suicide. 49th Regiment - A black and white photograph that is believed to be the only one in existence showing a soldier of the 49th during the Crimean War. It shows Major General Sir John L Pennefather and the staff of the second Division. Left to right are Lieutenant Wing 95th Regiment, Brevet Major William Bellairs 49th Regiment (Standing), Captain Layard, Captain Ellison, 47th Regiment, Colonel Wilbraham C.B, Sir John Pennefather K.C.B, Col the Hon Herbert, Lieutenant Colonel Thackwell, Staff Surgeon Wood M.D. Major Bellairs spent most of his time with the 49th in contact with the enemy. He went on to have a long and distinguished career which culminated with him being appointed as the Colonel of the Regiment.
