1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia photograph of the Maxim machine gun section of the 1st Battalion in Aldershot in 1900 prior to its joining the 2nd Battalion in South Africa to reinforce it for the Boer War. The Detachment Commander, Lieutenant Annersley, is at the front of the two machine gun teams. His platoon sergeant, Sergeant London, on the left of the photo, was severely wounded at Sanna's Post and returned with a bullet in his shoulder that he carried until the day he died in 1910, aged 42. Sergeant London was also one of the founding fathers of the Regimental Association.
