66th Regiment - A photocopy of a black and white photograph of ex-Drummer Richard Lodge. He enlisted into the 66th on the 24th November 1860 as a drummer boy at the age of 14 years and remained at the Regimental Depot at Colchester until 1865 when he moved to the band as a side drummer. He had a tough time there and was beaten many times and was in fear of the bandmaster. As a drummer, part of his duties were to administer floggings to men as the sentence of courts martial. He moved with the Regiment around England and was posted to Dublin in 1868 and other parts of Ireland where the Regiment were used to keep order on the streets during the Fenian uprising. He moved with the Regiment to India and completed a three month posting to Aden. He served with the Regiment throughout the Afghanistan campaign of 1879 and 1880 and was present at the Battle of Maiwand.
