1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photocopy of a photograph of the funeral of L/Corporal House VC. On 28 February 1912, L/Corporal House, aged 32, committed suicide in Shaft Barracks, Dover. At the subsequent inquest, Private Townley, Royal Berkshire Regiment said "Yesterday morning, about 7.15, I was doing up my boots in the barrack room at the Grand Shaft Barracks. I was speaking to a Lance Corporal, when I heard a report from the other end of the room, I looked up and saw Lance Corporal House fall backwards, I ran down to him and saw he had blown half his head off. I did not see anything else, I called out to Lance Sergeant Stroud that Lance Corporal House had blown his head off. There were six men in the room they were looking out of the window watching the Battalion march away. I ran into the next room and told another Sergeant." The verdict was suicide. His funeral took place at St James? Cemetery, Dover, with full Military Honours, in the presence of a large gathering of friends and sympathisers. The chief mourners were his mother, his brother Thomas, and sisters Daisy and Polly House.
1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white copy of a photograph of the funeral of L/ Corporal House, VC.showing the coffin, covered by the usual insignia, being conveyed to the cemetery on a gun carriage. The deceased?s Company formed the escort and firing party under Lieutenant Colonel A J W. Dowell. Captain L H Birt and Sergeant Day were in command of the firing party as the coffin was lowered and three volleys were fired over the grave, the ?Last Post? sounded, and to a lively march his comrades stepped off to their duties. His grave remained unmarked until 1994 when the Regiment, by now the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment, marked his grave with a Regimental headstone.

2nd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of Private W. House VC probably taken in South Africa around 1901. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for going to the rescue of his fatally wounded Sergeant at Zilicat's Nek on the 2nd August 1900 when under heavy fire and he was seriously wounded himself. This photo shows him with the VC and South African War campaign medals and he is in tropical uniform
