1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A colour photograph (Copyright) from a newspaper taken in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 1969. Barracks in those early days were disused factories, old buildings or anywhere a platoon of troops could rest for three days prior to a further nine days 'on the street'. Here we see Drummer Lovegrove and L/Corporal Fielding during ?C? Company's deployment. This is a publicity photograph as the platoon drummers would not have been allowed to play their instruments in such a fashion. At the time, drummers were attached to each platoon. Their function was to blow bugle commands to the troops, and also to attract the attention of a crowd. At least that was the theory - experience soon showed that it did not work and it was quickly phased out with drummers deploying as rifle sections in their own right.
