2nd/4th Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - Six of a collection of 21 postcards, some black and white and some coloured, which Sergeant Frank Taylor sent home from his journey out to India at the end of 1914, his stay there, including his convalescence from some unknown disease or accident, and from his stay in Military Hospitals on his return to England at the end of the War; all contain his messages for his wife, Poll, who lived at 3, Kingsbury House, Calne, Wiltshire. These six colour ones of Port Said (one) and the Sudan (five) have, spread over them, the message "When we were at Port Said the Officers advised us not to buy off the Native Boatmen who would come round us and said if we would give 8 pence each they would spend it to more advantage than we could. So they had about £70 to spend for us and when it was shared out we had a box of Turkish delight between two, 4 oranges, 2 cigarettes and 6 postcards each and these Cards I am sending to you to keep for me. I wish they had been more Port Said views, but still they are interesting, and you can get some idea of what the Country is like. I should have liked to land at a place or two on the way but it is not to be so we shant get off untill we get to India and then I expect we shall be busy for a day or two. Shant I have a lot to talk about when I see you again and may that time soon come. Althugh it has been a pleasant experience so far. I shall be glad to come back and settle down with you and it will be a treat to have a nice bed to get into once more and proper food." This primary image is of Gordon's Staue at Khartoum
