Your County Needs You! … at The Rifles Museum on Thursday, 13th April for a fascinating, fun and FREE look at the First World War with Trowbridge Museum and their WW1 recruitment workshop.

Discover what happened when men volunteered for King and Country then have your photograph taken in uniform – the perfect memento for your sweetheart back home – or try on a nurse’s outfit and experience life as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse – only for those with a strong constitution!

Today is Tofrek Day…marking the anniversary when the Berkshire Regiment became the Royal Berkshire Regiment, or to be precise the Princess Charlotte of Wales’ Royal Berkshire Regiment as it was known.  The Royal title was granted after the 1st Battalion were victorious from an unplanned attack during the Battle of Tofrek in Sudan, 22 March 1885.  As part of the new title the Regiment’s facings changed from white to blue.  Today we’re flying the Royal Berkshire flag – blue background with gold Chinese dragon motif – at the museum in honour of the occasion.  For more information on Tofrek Day visit our website:

Closing Early Tomorrow (Thursday 23 February 2017)

The museum will be closing early tomorrow, Thursday 23 February 2017, for one day only.  Last admission will be at 3.45pm, doors closing at 4.30pm. 

Normal opening times, 10am-5pm, will resume from Friday 24th February 2017.  Please see our Visitor Information page for details.

A new Temporary Exhibition is now open. Called the "Wiltshires in Gaza 1917: The Experiences of a Battalion during World War I", the exhibition tells the story of the Third Battle of Gaza in the Middle East from the perspective of the 1st/ 4th Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment.

Through diaries, letters, photographs and other interesting items from the collection, the exhibition will explore the personal experiences and observations of a local regiment on a conflict that is rarely documented.  It will run until 30 November 2017.

Museum Re-Opens Tomorrow

We re-open tomorrow (Wed 1 February 2017) at 10am after a very busy 2 months assessing the display objects, display cases and installing the New Exhibition “Wiltshire at Gaza 1917”.  A HUGE thank you to all our volunteers for their time over the Winter Closure in helping to get all the projects done.
