View Item99th Regiment - A letter and two photocopied documents concerning a visit to Tasmania and research into the 99th Regiment. The letter is handwritten and addressed to Major Peters from Mrs R Hayes; in it she writes about 2 headstones which she discovered for Norman McLauglein (musician to the Regiment, who died on the 4th September 1849, aged 39 years) and John Barnard (Master tailor, who died on the 18th January 1856, aged 34 years); the letter is dated the 29th January 1990. Accompanying the letter are 2 documents, the first is a typed page of biographical information concerning the 99th Regiment, marriages of members of the 99th Regiment and memorials and monuments erected to commemorate feats made by the British Army; extracts are from "The Military History of Tasmania" PAM 355.31 DOL and "Period of Service 1843-1856" PAM 355.31 HUD. The second document is a photocopy of a a document entitled 'Candidates for Employment', it is dated 1852.

This team is under the command of Lieutenant Benjamin Gonville Bromhead. (L to R) Private Berry, Private Bailey, Lieutenant B.G. Bromhead, Private Hiscock, Private Smith, C.S.I.M. Reed, Private White, Private Stone, Private Sumner, Private Hayes, Private Simmonds, Corporal Smith. [Bromhead was a member of the famous Bromhead family, one of whom won the VC at Rorke's Drift with the 24th of Foot in 1879. He was with the Regiment for many years. In the South African War he served as a Special Service Officer with the Rhodesian Field Force and with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. He went to France in 1914 but was badly wounded shortly after arriving. He died in 1939. His son followed him into the Regiment becoming the last Commanding officer of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1959.
