SBYRW : 649471st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - Two films entitled 'Eritrea 1949 1950' by Brian Cooper transcribed from VHS. This film runs for 15.minutes and 45 seconds. It is in black and white with no sound. We believe it covered the time of arrival in Eritrea by Ship and mainly moving images of the terrain in that country. The opening shots show a harbour with local hawkers ring to sell their wares. 1.55 - Shows a tented camp with unidentified soldiers. A dusty desert airfield with Dakotas. 3.38 - A sports event 3.57 - A Patrol group 5.54 - A car and Motor cycle race believed in Asmara. 7.18 - A crowd scene with local police present (We believe the Regiment would be nearly to back up). 9.40 - British Military Cemetery 10.00 Scence dockside 12.50 - Local defence troops on parade. At the end a ship leaving. During this period the battalion was deployed against Shifta Rebels. At the same time the 1st and 2nd Battalions were merged here as part of the post war reduction in the Army.

The result was that he possessed a satisfactory knowledge of the theory of the motion of projectiles and of the history, manufacture and explosive force of gunpowder and the history of small arms.

SBYRW : 64969Wessex Brigade Depot - A colour photograph of the Junior Soldiers Company (Summer term) 1974. This depot was responsible for training the recruits and junior soldiers for the Devon and Dorset Regiment, Gloucestershire Regiment, The Royal Hampshire Regiment and the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire). The instructors for the depot were drawn from the four main infantry regiment of the Wessex Brigade.
