A demonstration took place in the town to try and reinstate the disbanded 'B' Specials back. The Craigavon bridge was blocked off. The army deployed and sealed off the town in seven minutes, closing all the roads to the Bogside. Troops from the Queen's Regiment, Grenadier Guards and 'C' Company 1 DERR were involved. Here 9 Platoon, under the command of Lieutenant D.J.A. Stone, deploy across the Guildhall Square with the Londonderry wall in the background. Bottom right shoes Privates Hedges and Choules making their way to the rear to assist other soldiers nearby. A soldier from this platoon later remembered 'We marched down from the Diamond in the classic square formation, behind the Queens and in front of the Guards, supported by the 17th/21st Lancers in Ferret Scout cars. As we panned out into the Square all we could do was line out with some barbed wire and push the crowd back, there were a few bricks thrown but it was over and done with fairly quickly'. [The 'B' Specials were reserve policemen who were mainly Protestant and much hated by the Catholic population.]
