He had completed his training and was taking part in what was known as 'The satisfied Soldier scheme' whereby young soldiers who had just completed their recruit training were attached to a recruiting office for a short period of time to assist with recruiting young soldiers. After this task they would join their Battalion.

Trips were organized to this area and kept under Russian observation. All soldiers had to wear uniform. Each of the burial plots in the background contains 5000 Russian soldiers. These soldiers were killed in action in the Battle for Berlin in 1945.
