SBYRW : 387321st Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A sepia photograph of the ship 'Egypt' about 1898 . This is in the photograph album of Lieutenant F H Dansey and it is believed that this was the ship on which he travelled on to join the battalion in India after completing his training at Sandhurst about 1898. [ The Egypt was 7,912 gross tons, length 500ft x beam 54.4ft, two funnels, single screw, speed 16 knots, accommodation for 314-1st and 212-2nd class passengers, she could also carry 2,500 troops. Built 1897 by Caird & Co, Greenock for P & O Steam Nav Co, she was used mostly on the Indian and Australia services. In 1910 she carried the Princess Royal home from Egypt and in 1915 became a Hospital Ship, principally in the Mediterranean. On 20th May 1922 she sank in 20 minutes after colliding with the French ship SEINE in dense fog off Ushant. 71 crew and 15 passengers were lost as well as over one million pounds worth of gold bullion. Most of the bullion was later salvaged.]
