SBYRW : 593931st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of the Corps of Drums, led by Acting Drum Major Corporal A.E.G. Veal, on the Parade Square, Clifton Barracks, Minden, West Germany, 1968. This photograph was taken shortly after the issuing of the new drummers' helmets, minus the helmet plates that followed a short while later. The bass drummer in the centre is Dave Smith who after retirement became the chairman of the RGBW Reading branch of the Regimental Association. The tenor drummer (left, 2nd row) is Bob Safe who was killed in a tragic accident on 9 November 1968. While carrying out maintenance on the Drums Platoon's Armoured Personnel Carriers, he was crushed to death between a vehicle and a garage wall. He was later buried in his home town of Salisbury.[This was taken in late September 1968 as part of an afternoon of publicity photographing in preparation for the Band & Drums attendance at a British Week in Basle, Switzerland, which was then cancelled for diplomatic reasons. The photograph session was held on the square in Clifton Barracks and was notable for being directed by the Battalion second in command, Major 'Lofty' Graham, from the top of the cab of a 4 tonne truck, some photographs also being taken from there (the angle shows this was one). Cpl A E G Veal was standing in for the Drum Major who was on leave in UK. The new helmets had been received in Summer 1968 but helmet plates were not fitted until early in 1970 due to doubts about the DERR badge to be adopted after the change from Wessex Brigade to Prince of Wales Division in mid 1969.]
