3rd Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white copy of a photograph showing the 3rd Militia Battalion Colours and escorts around 1896. Left to Right are Colour Sergeant F Maune, Sergeant Major A Seeley and Colour/Sergeant W Thomas. The Colours were presented on 31 July 1855 by the Countess of Abingdon in a meadow close to the river Thames near Vastern Street in Reading. Shortly after their presentation, the Regiment embarked for Corfu. After the disbandment of the old Militia battalion in 1919, Mrs Clerke Brown took safe custody of the Colours until handing them back to the Regiment in 1933. The Regimental Colour -on the left of the photograph - is of particular interest in that it had the County Crest in the centre with the motto, "pro aris et focis" (translation, for our altars and hearths; for our homes).

Persons(s): Maune, F, Colour Sergeant; Seeley, W, WO2; Thomas, W, Colour Sergeant;
