1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of a group of regular recruits of number 43 platoon destined for 1 DERR from Topsham Barracks, Exeter, in November 1960. This was the last platoon of regular soldiers to train with National Servicemen. Left to right standing are Privates Gower, Emm, Hatt, -?-, Simpson, -?-, Davis and Instan. Left to right kneeling are Privates Bowack (potential officer), Pankhurst and Ede. Private Simpson was joining his brother who was already serving in the Battalion. During the training, this group were deployed to Exmouth after serious flooding. There they spent two days waist deep in water assisting civilians in clearing up operations together with the Commandos from Lympstone. On arrival at the Battalion which was then stationed in Tidworth, the recruits were posted to 'B' Company which had just arrived back from the Bahamas
