SBYRW : 148401st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A colour photograph showing a sight rarely seen by soldiers from the Regiment who never reached the Sergeants' Mess. On the day of a Ferozeshah Parade at the stroke of midnight the Colours would ceremoniously be handed back to the officers. Here we see WO1 (RSM) Venus in 1980 when the battalion was stationed in Osnabruck, West Germany, taking charge of the Regimental Colour prior to handing it back to the officers. The Queen's Colour is being carried at the slope by Colour sergeant Mortimer, and would be handed over shortly afterwards. The Drum Major who remains at the salute is Drum Major Harrill. This tradition was jealously guarded during the Regiment's existence and old comrades from the Regiment still meet on December 21 each year in Wiltshire to commemorate this Battle Honour and to honour the men of the 62nd Foot who fought at Ferozeshah.
Persons(s): Venus, J, WO1; Harrill, Drum Major; Mortimer, Colour Sergeant;
