SBYRW : 323131st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A sepia photograph of the Battalion amateur dramatic group in Malta in 1893. On this occasion they were playing Aladdin. It shows, standing 4th from the left, Lieutenant E.J. Neve and 5th Lieutenant E.F. Holden. This was the 1st Battalion's farewell pantomime in Malta in 1893. It was organised by Lieutenant Moore who wrote the extravaganza 'Aladdin and the Lamp', he designed all the costumes, took charge of all the stage arrangements, and directed the play. Sergeant Devaney was 'Widow Twanky' and the 'Princess' was a young English girl from a cafe in Strada Reale. Sergeants Lavington and Border played two automatons singing a popular song of the day 'Put a Penny in the Slot'. The event played for three nights to packed houses. All Malta agreed that the Battalion had excelled itself in its final performance]
