SBYRW : 147911st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of a group of Regimental Policemen in the early 1980s. In the rear row left to right are L/Corporal Petherick; Privates Hawkins and Leaman. (Sitting L to R) Sergeant Batty; Sergeant Major Mehrlich; Corporal Hiscock. Although barracks might change, discipline within them did not, with breaches of rules being dealt with by the Regimental Police. They always wore a black armband on the left arm with the letters RP and the regimental badge thereon. During the day they were used to round up delinquent soldiers who may have committed some real (or imagined) offence for fatigue duties. An ex-sergeant major remembered 'It was not unknown for some RSMs to recruit soldiers who had returned from the army prison at Colchester known as 'The Glasshouse' as members of the RP section, poachers turned gamekeepers as it were'. It was useful if members of this section could box. Sergeant Major Mehrlich was a battalion boxer of note, winning the Army Light Weight Boxing Championship in 1972. He later served with the Royal Scots in the first Gulf War and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Persons(s): Petherick, Lance Corporal; Hawkins, Private; Leaman, Private; Batty, Sergeant; Mehrlich, WO1; Hiscock, Corporal;
