1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white digital image of an unarmed patrol of 9 Platoon in the Diamond area in the old city of Londonderry showing, from left to right, Private Hiscock, Corporal Pavey, Privates Bushnell and Thomas. These were early days with the troops experimenting with different scales of equipment depending on the threat. Corporal Pavey brought his experience from serving in the 1st Wiltshire's during the EOKA campaign in Cyprus, and Private Bushnell had previous experience of 'aid to the civil power' in Hong Kong whilst serving with the South Wales Borderers. He was one of many Welshmen transferred to the Regiment on the amalgamation of the South Wales Borderers and the Welsh Regiment in early 1969. Although these foot patrols were unarmed, weapons were always near to hand.
