1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of the battalion heavy and light weight Tug-of-War teams, champions of Malta Command, 1964, at the Marsa sports ground. Standing Left to Right are Corporal Hadley (coach and trainer),Private Wilson, Corporals Wright and Hole, Privates Greening and Dor, L/Corporal Williams, Private Hyde, Sergeant Stafford (who became the RSM in 1976); CSM Barrow (who became the RSM in 1966); kneeling Left to Right are Privates Blowkett, Groom, Mullen, Tull, Neville, Corporal Cripps, Private Shears and Corporal Davis. There were very few major units on the island but the team made their mark on the first serious contest when they beat the 2nd Royal Malta Artillery (who had won the championship for seven years in succession) by two pulls to nil. These regimental sportsmen followed in the footsteps of the Royal Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiments which both fielded outstanding Tug-of-War teams.
