1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of a group of soldiers in 1964. The Battalion deployed from Malta to Cyprus on operation 'Quilt'. The first task was to secure the perimeter of Nicosia airport. Here we see soldiers from 'B' Company taking a rest from their labours whilst digging in on the perimeter which at that time was thought to be vulnerable to attack by Turkish forces. Left to right are Privates Onuaguluchi, Leahy; Cooper and Harper, with Private McGlyn standing in the trench. Private Leahy, a Battalion boxer, and later a regimental policeman, was killed in action in Northern Ireland in 1973. Private Cooper (holding a hunting knife) later joined the Royal Air Force rising through the ranks to Group Captain. Private Onuaguluchi, after returning to Nigeria, became the marketing manager of the Agricultural Development Corporation in Enugu.
