Berkshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of Captain T Murphy, Adjutant of the 3rd Militia Battalion in Reading from 1875 to 1880, who retired with the rank of Colonel. He lived in Reading for many years and retired to Southsea in 1895. Captain Murphy had served in the Crimea with the 46th of Foot exchanging to the 66th where he remained for the remainder of his service. When the Regiment returned to England after the battle of Maiwand in 1880, Captain Murphy was selected to command the Guard of Honour at Osborne House for Queen Victoria, and accordingly went to live in a small cottage nearby which he named 'Maiwand Cottage'. His son later remembered ?Whilst there he had the opportunity of ascertaining Her Majesty's personal views upon that battle. With her amazing grasp of public affairs, she had come to know the inner story of that disaster, and of the magnificent show put up by the 66th. It may not be generally realised that the title of Royal, conferred on the Berkshire Regiment after Tofrek in 1885, was not given for their services in that action alone, but largely for Maiwand. Tofrek merely afforded Her Majesty a gratifying opportunity of bestowing on the Regiment a personal mark of the royal favour". His son C Murphy was born into the Regiment in India and he went on to have a long and illustrious career in the Regiment. Photographer; A & E Taylor, 129 Fenchurch Street, London EC
