99th Regiment - A sepia portrait photograph of Major George Jean de Winton in civilian clothes. He joined the 99th Foot in 1841 and was stationed in Chatham and Sheerness until 1843 when he was placed in command of the military guard on the convict ship Constant, bound for Van Diemen?s Land. The governor of that colony at the time was Sir John Franklin, fated to perish in the frozen wastes of the arctic. The Major and Sir John became steadfast friends. Major de Winton remained in the Antipodes until 1853 doing military duty at Norfolk Island, Sydney, Brisbane, Bathhurst and various other places. During this period he saw service several times against the aborigines. The town of Winton in Queensland was named after him, and one of the principal streets in Brisbane also bears his name. He again saw active service during the Crimean War, where he was the Brigade Major of the Anglo-Swiss legion. He was for some time the editor of the United Service Magazine and produced a book entitled "Soldiering Fifty Years Ago. Australia in the Forties". He was a regular contributor to the regimental magazine The Nines, writing under the pseudonym 'Chateau'. He died in 1898. [There is doubt over the naming of the town, Winton, although recently (2006) the local council requested copies of photograph of Major Winton for their town hall.] Photographer: Maull & Fox, 187a, Piccadilly, London
