Wiltshire Regiment - Two folders containing various personal documents belonging to Private Walter John Cox. There is a diary, written between November 1899 and April 1900. There is a Parchment Certificate of Discharge for him. Private W J Cox was discharged in consequence of the termination of his first period of engagement. This document is dated 21st August 1902. There are also two Parchment Certificates of Character discribing him as a very good, trustworthy man, dated 29th June 1897 and 21st August 1902.

It contains a day to day account of life in the Battalion by him from 15 January 1900 when he was recalled to the Colours, reporting to the Depot at Devizes, until 12th February 1901. The original is in a small black notebook.

The first notebook contains 7 items, (a) The structure of the British 2nd Division; (b) A brief summary of the Arakan Campaign of 1943; (c) Opening the Kohima-Imphal Road; (d) Account of the Kohima Divisional Memorial; (e) The Road to Mandalay; (f) The battle for Rangoon; (g) 2 poems written during the Battle for Mandalay.The second notebook contains 4 items, (a) an account by Cpl Hurd of a patrol in April 1943; (b) an account by Pte Purslow of the attack by the Japanese on 23 April 1944; (c) an account of a patrol on 1 March 1945 and (d) a copy of a poem to the memory of those who fell in the Battle of Kohima written by an [unnamed] member of the DLI. These items have been transcribed.

1st Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment- A typed copy of the diary of Private Walter Wickens of "D" Company. He served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment during the 1st World War, and took part in the retreat from Mons in 1914. He was wounded on 6th November 1914 and survived the War and died in 1952.

5th Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A file of papers known as the ?Gold papers? as they are from Lieutenants Cecil, Patrick and Alec Gold, this is a file of typed correspondence to and from the three Gold brothers, all of whom served in the battalion in the Great War. The file is sub divided into three volumes. Volume 1 covers the period 31st May to 27th August 1915, Volume 2 the 1st September to 30th December 1915 and Volume 3 the 5th January to 21st September 1916. This file is fully indexed with names and places and a good resource for anyone making a study of the Battalion during the 1st World War. Cecil Gold was killed in action on the 3rd July 1916.
