1st Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of Christoforou Kyriakos Matsis, an EOKA terorist in Cyprus, who had been the primary target for the 1st Battalion for two years. He was detained in 1956 but escaped and then went on to organise a very efficient EOKA group in the Kyrenia district. Amongst the indigenous population, his name was held in awe, whilst every soldier knew his face from the many photographs displayed. On 24 November 1958 as a result of information received troops of the Wiltshire, Royal Berkshire and Parachute Regiments surrounded the small village of Kato Dhikomo and commenced a search. A soldier of the Wiltshire Regiment uncovered a hide after finding several loose tiles in a house. Matsis had been discovered at last, together with two other men. They were called upon to surrender, which the other two, both wanted men, did. Matsis refused and shouted he would come out shooting. He was killed after a couple of grenades were dropped into the hole.
