2nd Bn, Wiltshire Regiment - A black and white photograph of a quarter guard in France. The Battalion went to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force on 14 September 1939. Here we see the Secretary of State, Stanley Oliver, inspecting a guard of honour during the 'Phoney War'. The Battalion went to great lengths to maintain pre-war regimental standards. Left is the newly appointed commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier Miles Dempsey MC, formerly the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, who went on to command the Second Army under General Montgomery.
