1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment - A colour newspaper photograph of Private Welsh, 11 Platoon, ‘C’ Company, awakening to a welcome cup of tea on the morning of 25 September 1969, in a side street in Londonderry. After the rioters had gone home the troops were required to stay in the same locations, which meant sleeping in the street. Once the situation stabilised the troops worked nine days out on the streets, followed by three days rest. This was repeated until the completion of the tour of duty in December. A soldier who served at that time said 'The three days rest was a bit of a myth, the first day was spent sorting out our kit from the nine days that we had just done, the second day was rest, and the third day was preparation to go back out again'.
