1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of L/Corporal David Weaving, 'A' Company, on patrol in the Dundalk Road, Crossmaglen, Northern Ireland, 1984. He was one of three brothers serving in the battalion at that time ? Mark was in Bessbrook and Mick in Forkhill. It was common practice in family regiments such as 1 DERR to split up brothers when engaged on active service. L/Cpl Weaving later remembered 'When that photo was taken we were showing a Dutch Major around our area of responsibility. I was the brick commander [A brick is a four man team] armed with an Armalite, and the remainder of my patrol were armed with a 'gimpy' [General Purpose Machine Gun], a Bren gun [7.62], an SLR [Self Loading Rifle] plus a 79mm grenade launcher, so all in all we were well armed. At the time we were deployed on a cordon because another patrol has discovered an IED [improvised explosive device] in a nearby lamppost. My brick had gone past the lamppost the day before but fortunately it did not explode because a horse in the field that was next to the lamp post ate the fertilizer that formed part of the explosive, stopping it from going off, I have a soft spot for horses now'. L/Cpl Weaving's regimental cap badge is painted matt black, a practice adopted in Northern Ireland to avoid it becoming an easy target for snipers.
