8th Bn, Royal Berkshire Regiment - A black and white copy of a photograph of Colonel William Crawford Walton, Commanding Officer. On the outbreak of war he was on leave in England from his appointment in India. He was tasked to raise and train the 8th Battalion which he did with great efficiency. Veterans from the Battalion remember his training methods were hard, but served them well later. He went into action with his Battalion on the 25th September 1915, at the Battle of Loos. His Battalion received praise in Haig's dispatches. He himself was gassed at that time and, after convalescing, he was posted to Aden.
