1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of the Quarter Guard for Prince Charles. The Battalion served in West Berlin from 1971-1973 based in Brooke Barracks. He visited the Battalion on the 29 October 1972, and the quarter guard was commanded by Sergeant Venus. The visit coincided with three of the Prince of Wales’s Division Regiments being in Berlin at the same time. (1 Cheshire Regiment, 1 Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, 1 DERR). The Prince remained with the Battalion for about an hour. The link between the Regiment and his father was not lost on Prince Charles when he commented ‘I gather you are known as ‘Dad’s Army!’ [Sergeant Venus became the Battalion’s RSM in 1980 after which he was commissioned.]

1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A colour photograph showing a sight rarely seen by soldiers from the Regiment who never reached the Sergeants' Mess. On the day of a Ferozeshah Parade at the stroke of midnight the Colours would ceremoniously be handed back to the officers. Here we see WO1 (RSM) Venus in 1980 when the battalion was stationed in Osnabruck, West Germany, taking charge of the Regimental Colour prior to handing it back to the officers. The Queen's Colour is being carried at the slope by Colour sergeant Mortimer, and would be handed over shortly afterwards. The Drum Major who remains at the salute is Drum Major Harrill. This tradition was jealously guarded during the Regiment?s existence and old comrades from the Regiment still meet on December 21 each year in Wiltshire to commemorate this Battle Honour and to honour the men of the 62nd Foot who fought at Ferozeshah.

1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh?s Royal Regiment - A colour photograph showing the Colour Party in 1983. In April 1962, six Fijian recruits joined the Battalion whilst it was serving in Tidworth. They were Privates Baleimatuku, Ravu, Turaga, Qarau, Conivavalagi and Raidani. Three of these soldiers remained with the Battalion for the full term of twenty two years, playing an active part in both regimental and operational affairs. They particularly excelled at boxing and rugby. Here we see the three remaining soldiers together with RSM Venus on their last Ferozeshah Parade in 1983. From left to right, they are Colour Sergeant Baleimatuku, Sergeant Ravu and Colour Sergeant Turaga. To mark the end of the Fijians' service both Colour Sergeants were honoured by being selected to carry the Colours and, as the Regimental Journal recorded, 'The Commanding Officer could not have entrusted the safe guarding of the Colours to two more loyal and dedicated Colour Sergeants'.
