1st Bn, Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment - A black and white photograph of soldiers of ‘C’ Company prior to deployment to Ulster in 1969. August 1969 saw the rifle companies scattered worldwide. 'A' Company was in Malaysia, 'B' Company in British Honduras and 'C' Company were left holding the fort at 1 DERR’s base in Alma Barracks, Catterick, Yorkshire. The situation in Northern Ireland deteriorated to such a degree that extra troops were sent from the mainland. Here the Commanding Officer, Lt-Col. T.A. Gibson addresses ‘C’ Company and the Drums Platoon prior to their departure. Little did these soldiers know that they were the first of several generations who would be deployed in Ulster. Stood Left is Lieutenant Titley.
